The account is the drop-off point
Traditional client portal software is built around a login. That made sense when the portal was a permanent workspace, but most firms use it for something narrower: getting a handful of documents from a client two or three times a year.
For that job, the account is pure friction. A client asked to set a password, verify an email and remember a URL will postpone the task — and the portal has cost you the thing it was meant to speed up.
What a tokenised portal changes
Each recipient receives a unique link. Opening it shows their checklist, their progress and nothing belonging to anyone else. There is no shared password to circulate and no dormant account to deprovision when the engagement ends.
Security is scoped to the token rather than to a credential the client will reuse elsewhere. Access is per recipient, per request, and every action is recorded against that request.
When you do want a full portal
A tokenised portal is the right shape for document collection and onboarding. It is the wrong shape for an ongoing workspace where clients log in weekly to message you, view invoices, browse a document history and track matters.
